Botany

Clary sage is native to Western Asia and Southern and Central Europe. It is widely cultivated both as an ornamental and medicinal plant. It is a herbaceous plant of the Lamiaceae family, cultivated for its leaves' aromatic and medicinal qualities. Its large hairy leaves, white flowers, tinged with purple and very fragrant, characterize it.

The common name "sage" comes from the Latin "Salvia" meaning "I save".

History

Sage was a sacred herb to the Romans who believed that its use alleviated sickness.

Whether officinalis or clary, sage enjoyed a reputation as a panacea throughout the Middle Ages and up until the 18th century. There is not a monastery where it was not cultivated and it is one of the pillars of Western herbalism.

Legend has it that Zeus was raised by a goat next to a sage bush.

This sage is said to have conferred divine power to the milk. Since then, "Jupiter's plant" or the "sacred herb" has always been endowed with extraordinary powers.

Properties

Clary Sage Essential Oil acts as a skin regulator. Made up of more than 60% terpene esters, its properties with regard to sebum secretion as well as its anti-perspirant capacity make it recommendable in case of oily scalp, oily skin and excessive perspiration.

The Kiotis laboratory has shown, through in vitro scientific tests, that Clary Sage Essential Oil regenerates the skin by stimulating cell renewal.

By acting in depth, it prevents the signs of aging.

Finally, it is able to limit the growth of the microbial flora thereby delivering a purifying effect.

Did you know?

Clary sage is widely used to flavour vermouths and liqueurs as well as to give certain wines a pleasant muscat aroma.

In the Middle Ages, it was used to clear eyesight, hence the name “clary”.
