Botany
The ylang-ylang is a tree of the Annonaceae family, native to Southeast Asia. It is cultivated for its flowers from which an essential oil, widely used in perfumery, is extracted by means of distillation.
The ylang-ylang tree, which can grow to up to 20 metres tall in the wild, is pruned to human height when cultivated.
History
The distillation of ylang-ylang flowers was launched in Manila in the Philippines around 1860 by a sailor named Albert Schwenger who, seduced by the smell of the flowers, would have travelled through the countryside with a still to harvest and distil small quantities of flowers.
Shortly afterwards, the cultivation of ylang-ylang was undertaken on a large scale by the planters of the French possessions in the Indian Ocean on behalf of French perfumers.
Properties
Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil is known for its beneficial action on well-being thanks to its relaxing and anti-stress properties.
The Kiotis laboratory has demonstrated, through in vitro scientific tests, the protective properties of Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil against the harmful effects of pollution. Deep down, it also limits the contractions of facial muscle that cause wrinkles.
The skin, protected, is therefore smoother and more radiant with a more luminous complexion.
