Botany
Cardamom is mainly grown on the Malabar coast of India. It is a herbaceous plant with rhizomes, and belongs to the gingiberaceae family. The plant blooms and then produces seeds in the form of very fragrant green capsules containing small black seeds.
Although India is the largest producer of Cardamom, only a small part of its production is exported, due to high domestic demand.
The main exporter is Guatemala, where Cardamom was introduced less than a century ago and is grown for export.
History
It is cited for its medicinal virtues by the Greeks Theophrastus and Dioscorides, or by the Roman Pliny the Elder. Reference is made to it on an Egyptian papyrus dating back to 1500 BC, as well as in ancient Egypt’s magical perfume, Kyphi.
Properties
The Kiotis laboratory has demonstrated, through in vitro scientific tests, the protective properties of Cardamom Essential Oil against skin dehydration. It also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin fibres.
The skin therefore regains its firmness, is plumped and appears smoother on the surface.
For this property Cardamom Essential Oil can be found in Lift Parfait.
Did you know?
Cleopatra perfumed her palace with it during the visits of the Roman Emperor Mark Antony. Cardamom was then known for its aphrodisiac virtues.
